Emilia Markovich - Art

What is your background?
I taught for 31 years in public schools and this is my 3rd year at Ave. I am a Colorado State Licensed teacher.

Where are you from?
I am from White Plains, New York.

Tell us about your family?
I am married to my husband Richard, who is an architect with Wold Architects,my son Alex who lives in Denver and is the assistant director for The state’s Small Business Development Center, and my golden retriever, Ozzie. I am Puerto Rican, my mother is from Puerto Rico.

What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I like to work in my studio making my artwork, I like to travel, garden, paddleboard, cook and hike with my dog.

What is your favorite part of the school day?
My favorite part of the school day is introducing new art lessons to the students and seeing them super excited and engaged!

Why do you chose to teach at Ave Maria?
I chose to teach at Ave because it was a change from public school and was a smaller caring, faith based community.

What do you love about teaching art?
The thing I love about teaching art is that you are able to introduce students to all different types of artists and cultures and then give them the opportunity to express themselves through their artwork. I love seeing the amazing work they create and how good it makes them feel.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about art, family, children, animals, our planet and kindness and equality.

What do students get at Ave Maria that they would not get elsewhere?
Students at Ave get a quality education in a small caring environment. They are taught a culture of caring and kindness to each other, while developing a strong faith.

What do you love most about Ave Maria?
The thing I love the most about Ave are the wonderful students and staff.

What is your most memorable experience at Ave Maria?
This is hard to choose , but the 8th grade continuation celebration during the lockdown was amazing.  How the staff came together to make it a great event for the students and how grateful and excited the students were was very special. In a difficult time it was uplifting and inspiring!
