Jennifer Byrd - 6th Grade Homeroom & 6/7 Language Arts
Where are you from?
I am a Colorado native. I grew up in northern Colorado and now reside in Parker with my family. What is your background? I graduated with honors, cum laude, from the University of Denver with my Bachelor’s in Leadership and Organization Studies. I am currently pursuing, and nearly finished with, my Master’s degree, phew! I am a Colorado State Licensed teacher. This will be my seventh year teaching with experience in both visual and middle school literary arts. I am passionate both about teaching and about learning. I myself am a lifelong learner. I love reading as I am always in the middle of reading something new. Literature is a door to new ideas and pushes students to think. In order to be a voice of good, a voice of change, or a voice of reason in this complicated world, one needs to have critical thinking skills, worldly knowledge, and, most importantly, be skilled at communicating their ideas. |
What do you love about teaching?
What excites and motivates me as a teacher everyday is being a part of students’ growth as their minds open to a new world, new thoughts, experiencing new moral challenges through literature, and self-expression in their writing.
Why did you choose to teach at Ave Maria?
I chose to teach at Ave Maria because it is an environment that supports teaching moral values and ensures that students are building a strong character in addition to being a part of a high achieving academic program.
Tell us about your family?
My world outside of the classroom is always interesting! My husband and three kids are constantly involved in numerous activities. My husband, oldest daughter, and son all play ice hockey which is a crazy busy lifestyle. We also all love watching and cheering on the Colorado Avalanche. My second daughter, my middle child, participates in a broadcasting club and in cross-country. My family and I have a passion for both music and art. We are always playing instruments and always creating art. I personally play the ukulele, paint, draw, and, of course, write.
