Mike Simco - 7th Grade Homeroom & Middle School Social Studies

What is your background?
Bachelors in Accounting from the University of Colorado and a Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security from the University of Denver. I am a Colorado State Licensed teacher with a Social Studies Endorsement.

Where are you from?
Born and raised in Aurora, CO

Tell us about your family?
I have been married to my wife Denise for 18 years. We have one daughter, Hailey, who is an Ave Alum. She is entering her Sophomore year at Regis Jesuit.

What do you like to do in your free time?
My favorite thing to do is chase Hailey around playing softball year round. We love to camp and ATV anytime we have a free weekend (softball keeps us very busy). I also love to read mostly about history. We have a small ranch with goats, chickens, ducks, and geese that keep us busy.

What is something people may not know about you?
I retired 6 years ago from the Army.

What is your favorite part of your school day?
Hands down, the mornings. I love seeing our students at the beginning of their day.

Why do you choose to teach at Ave Maria?
We have been part of the Ave community since our daughter, Hailey, began JrK. The sense of community made me want to be a larger part of that; it has not disappointed in all of our years. I am surrounded by the best of the best colleagues, families and students.

What do you love about teaching?
I am overwhelmingly excited to teach middle school Social Studies starting this year. I love history, especially military history. But what I love most about teaching is teaching the whole person. In addition to curriculum, I am passionate about teaching and coaching students through life and through the lens of our faith.

What are you passionate about?
My students!

What do students get at Ave Maria that they won’t get somewhere else?
A community that loves them and a learning environment that is 2nd to none.

What do you love most about Ave Maria?
The community!

What do you love most about your job?
I love being a Teacher, Coach, and Mentor to our students.
