Beatrice Skoog – Principal
What is your background?
I have been in education for 20 years. I hold a Master’s degree in Special Education with licensing in general ED K-6, Gifted and Talented Pre-K through 12th grade. I am also administrative licensed pre-K through 12th grade. I have been with Ave Maria for 12 years.
I’ve spent 11 years as an administrator. I have worked as a headstart teacher in the Kindergarten program, a Montessori group leader for the 2 – 3 year old program, a third grade teacher, and K through 8th grade student service teacher. Before becoming an administrator, I worked at a daycare for hearing impaired students and I have also volunteered at centers for abused children in the school age department during my summer vacations.
Where are you from?
I was born in Italy, but raised in North Denver after moving to America with my parents and 2 siblings in the 1980’s.
Tell us about your family?
We are a family of educators. My parents were teachers, my husband is a teacher. We have three children who attend Ave Maria. Bella is in 8th grade, Emilia in 6th grade, and Francis in Jr. Kindergarten.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to paint, take family walks, and go fishing.
What is your favorite part of your school day?
Seeing the kiddos. I love seeing children’s smiling faces. It doesn’t matter how stressful my day is, children are so funny and sweet, and always bring a smile to my face.
Why do you choose to teach at Ave Maria?
I love Ave Maria because the academics are the best of the best and Christ is at the center of each day. I went to a Catholic school growing up and I see the faith that I have and the faith my brothers hold. One of my brothers is a priest. The seed is planted young and I want my children to grow strong roots. I can’t think of a more loving and supportive environment to work in, let alone raise a family in.
What do you love about teaching?
I love working with kids and helping them grow and learn. I love the way a student lights-up when they finally grasp a concept they didn't understand. They feel such joy and pride and I love to celebrate in their success with them!
What are you passionate about?
My family, my faith, and my community.
What do students get at Ave Maria that they won’t get somewhere else?
Christ embedded throughout the day with teachers who care and are here by choice. It is more than a job to them. It is a vocation. I firmly believe, here at Ave Maria, the students get the best of the best educators in a Christ centered environment.
What do you love most about Ave Maria?
The kids. I also love the community feel.
What has been your most memorable moment at Ave Maria so far?
A couple of years ago, my family had some hardship. I had to have a pretty serious surgery, my husband lost his mom, my son was diagnosed with a genetic condition, and my house flooded! The community rallied around us, lifted us in prayer and support; wrote words of wisdom and kindness. We were truly blessed and I was so thankful to be a part of such a family.
What do you love most about your job?
Making a difference in helping others grow and learn academically as well as in their faith, and being immersed in this beautiful community myself.
